By-laws and Structure
As socialists we believe in the spirit of democracy and transparency so it’s critical that our members - whether new or long time members! - understand how the chapter and national organization functions. This is to ensure that confusion or a lack of clarity doesn't get in the way of participation.
Most of the work in the chapter happens in the committees and working groups. Monthly regular meetings, or general body meetings, are chapter wide and usually take place on the third Sunday of every month from 7pm to 9pm. Check the calendar, newsletter, or internal listserv for reminders and updates!
General Body (membership)
The general body consists of all members of the chapter which meets monthly and where chapter business such as committee reports, general proposals, and broader decisions about the chapter are discussed and voted on. It’s actually more exciting than it sounds as we get to hear about the great work that other comrades are doing in the chapter and we typically set aside time for discussion and debate.
Working groups and committees
Working Groups and Committees are where all the hard work and magic happens! These meet regularly and are where our goals of building equality, solidarity, and democracy in Ithaca and beyond are put into action, whether its campaigns for tenants’ rights, anti-racist demonstrations, or supporting local labor struggles. The steering committee
The steering committee is chapter leadership which includes the chapter’s officers, the chairs of each issue-based committee, plus a few additional administrative positions. This group meets more frequently than the monthly chapter wide general meetings to discuss direction and communication. The committee chairs are decided on democratically within their meetings while the officers are voted on annually by all chapter members.
